Starting next year, my school will only let you be absent with a doctor’s certificate and parental choice is not an excuse.

Beginning next year, my school will require a doctor’s certificate for any absences, and parental decisions won’t be accepted as valid reasons. Additionally, we’re limited to just four absences per term. It’s absolutely absurd—it feels like our free will is being taken away.

Update: I’ve learned that this policy isn’t only at my school; it’s implemented statewide in Victoria for students in year 11 and above. It really highlights the issues within the education system.

  1. I can understand your frustration. It feels like schools often prioritize strict policies over individual circumstances, and that can be really tough for students. Limiting absences to just four a term can add a lot of pressure, especially when life happens—sometimes you genuinely need a day off for mental health or personal reasons. It’s concerning to see how regulations can impact students’ well-being and autonomy. Have you considered discussing your feelings about this with teachers or school administration? It might be worth bringing up the need for more flexibility in these rules, especially when it comes to mental health and personal situations.
