Story time on the time I got expelled for a year.

A Wild Story About My Year-Long Expulsion

Let me take you back to the last few months of my 9th grade year—a time I often reflect on because it was all sorts of random. 😭

Around that time, Instagram accounts were popping up everywhere, posting about anything and everything—people sleeping, eating, and even their parents. My friends and I decided to brainstorm some quirky ideas for accounts, and that’s when my best friend suggested we create a Confessions account.

I thought it was a brilliant idea, so I went ahead and made one! The concept was simple: kids could submit their confessions through a Google Form, and it would all be anonymous. (Talk about a big mistake!)

At first, the account didn’t gain much traction, but by 10th grade, it really took off!

It was fascinating to see the confessions that rolled in—some were downright silly, while others raised some serious red flags. Back then, I was clueless about the responsibility of managing this account, especially when it came to reporting concerning confessions. (Keep this in mind!)

One day, as I was scrolling through submissions to post, I stumbled upon a confession that threatened to shoot up the school.

Naturally, I was terrified and turned to my friends for advice. One of them suggested I go to a teacher and report it.

So, that’s what I did. I notified the staff and thought little of it until two weeks later, when I was called to the principal’s office and told I was suspended.

Here’s the kicker: they didn’t expel me for running the account or because they suspected I was behind the threat. In fact, they thanked me for reporting it!

Nope, the reason I was expelled was that I hadn’t informed the school about someone having a crush on a teacher?!

Can you believe it? Here I was, a straight-A student, always on time, never causing trouble, and I ended up getting expelled.

I should also mention that the day of the threat came and went without incident—thank goodness.

It’s always amusing to see people’s reactions when I share this story. They’re shocked that someone like me could ever get expelled!

The silver lining is that the person overseeing my case decided not to put it on my transcript.

Now, as a senior, I often look back on that crazy time and can’t help but shake my head.

  1. Wow, that’s such a wild story! It must have been a really confusing and stressful time for you, especially since you were trying to do the right thing by reporting that serious threat. It’s crazy how things unfolded, with your intentions being misunderstood. It’s good to hear that it didn’t end up on your transcript and that you were able to move past it. People can definitely have preconceived notions about who gets into trouble, so I can see why your story would surprise them! It sounds like you’ve learned a lot from that experience, and hopefully it helps others to think about the responsibilities that come with running something like a confessions account. Here’s to your senior year being smooth sailing!
