Need Advice on Technical School Shop Choice

Hi everyone, I apologize if this isn’t the right place for my post, but I really need some advice and I’m feeling kind of desperate. I recently chose a permanent shop at my technical school, but I’m already feeling overwhelmed and unhappy with my decision. It’s only been a few weeks, and I’ve found myself crying at home because of the stress it’s causing.

While the shop has some good aspects, I’m struggling to understand a lot of what we’re learning. There’s another shop I initially considered that focuses on material I’ve always enjoyed, but now I’m hesitant to make the switch because it’s known for having some students I don’t get along with, and it has a bit of a reputation as the “weird kid shop.”

On the flip side, I genuinely like the people in my current shop, even though I’m not a fan of the material. Plus, the idea of switching fills me with anxiety. Both teachers from each shop have been supportive of me, which makes the whole situation even more complicated—I don’t want to hurt my friends’ feelings, especially since my current shop has a small group.

I feel really stuck and dread each week of school. If anyone has any thoughts or advice, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read this! I’m happy to clarify anything in the comments since I know I can ramble on.

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed in such a situation. You have to consider what’s most important to you right now: your overall happiness and well-being, or the potential discomfort of switching to a new environment.

Here are a few things you might want to think about:

    1. Evaluate Your Priorities: Think about what matters most to you—are you more inclined to enjoy the material you’ll be working with, or the friendships you’ve built? It’s important to find a balance that suits your needs.

    2. Talk to Someone: Have an open conversation with someone you trust, like a teacher or a counselor. They can provide insight and support, and help you weigh your options.

    3. Consider a Trial Period: If possible, see if you can spend a day or a few hours in the shop you’re considering switching to. This might help you get a feel for the environment and the people without fully committing.

    4. Make Your Decision for You: Ultimately, this is your experience. It’s natural to feel guilty about the impact your decision may have on your friends, but you have to prioritize your own mental health and happiness.

    5. Remember That Change Is Hard: It’s completely normal to feel anxious about switching. Change can be intimidating, but it can also lead to growth and new opportunities.

Take your time making your decision—it’s okay to want what’s best for yourself. Whatever you choose, know that you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to ask for help along the way.
