I’d love your thoughts on including the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification (MOS) in my college application. I’ve shared something similar before but didn’t receive much feedback, so I’m posting again. I hold certifications in all three Microsoft applications: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as an additional certificate for completing all three. That gives me four certifications in total. Do you think they hold value in a college application?

I could use some advice picking out a prom suit! This is the dress my date chose (not her in the picture, just showing the style!). She’ll be rocking white 6-inch stilettos and wants me to wear a white undershirt and white sneakers. What kind of jacket or blazer do you think would work best? […]
Can I wear a cord or stole at my graduation ceremony, and where can I get one? I’m graduating early in December 2024, and my ceremony is coming up in a few months. I’m also in the process of enlisting in the military and just waiting for my shipping date. I’ve heard from several people […]
Including the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification (MOS) on your college application can certainly add value, especially if you’re applying to programs that emphasize digital literacy or business-related fields. While it might not carry as much weight as other achievements like advanced coursework or extracurricular activities, it demonstrates several important skills:
Technical Proficiency: It shows that you have a solid understanding of essential software tools that are widely used in academia and the workplace.
Commitment to Learning: Earning certifications requires dedication and initiative, which colleges appreciate.
Diverse Skill Set: Being certified in multiple applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) suggests a well-rounded skill set that can be beneficial in various contexts.
While it’s unlikely to be a standout feature of your application by itself, it can definitely complement other aspects of your profile. Just make sure to present it in context with your other academic and extracurricular achievements. If there’s an opportunity to explain how these skills have helped you in school projects, internships, or other experiences, that can make it even more impressive.
