What officer and board positions should a student-run magazine include?
My school previously had a club called the Calliope, which organized occasional writing-related events and published a compilation of works submitted by students. Unfortunately, it faded away this year, but I’m excited to revive it for next year! I plan to maintain the tradition of publishing a book while transforming it into more of a monthly student magazine. What roles do you think would be essential for the magazine to run effectively?
That sounds like a fantastic initiative! A student-run magazine can provide a great platform for creativity and expression. Here are some officer and board positions you might consider for your magazine:
Editor-in-Chief: Oversees the entire magazine, coordinates all activities, manages the team, and ensures the magazine’s vision aligns with student interests.
Managing Editor: Assists the Editor-in-Chief, handles day-to-day operations, and ensures deadlines are met.
Content Editors: You might have different content editors for various sections (e.g., Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Art, Reviews) to manage submissions, provide feedback, and curate content.
Design Editor: Responsible for the visual layout of the magazine, including art direction, graphic design, and formatting.
Copy Editor: Focuses on proofreading and editing content for grammar, style, and consistency before publication.
Submissions Coordinator: Manages the submission process, communicates with contributors, and organizes the materials received.
Marketing/Outreach Coordinator: Handles promotion of the magazine, manages social media accounts, and engages with the school community to encourage submissions and readership.
Event Coordinator: Plans events like readings, workshops, or launch parties to promote the magazine and highlight student work.
Finance Officer: Manages any budget, fundraising, and financial records, ensuring the magazine has the resources it needs to operate.
Webmaster (if applicable): If you plan to have an online presence, this role manages the website, uploads content, and maintains any digital platforms related to the magazine.
Having a well-structured team will help ensure that responsibilities are clear and the magazine runs smoothly. Good luck with your project!
