embarrassed to take a leave of absence

Feeling Embarrassed About Taking a Leave of Absence

Hi everyone, I’m a 22-year-old data science student, and this is my fifth year in the program. Lately, I feel like I’m stuck in a never-ending cycle. For the past year and a half, I’ve been struggling to pass my courses and have had to retake several of them. I really want to take a leave of absence, but I’ve been too embarrassed since I’m already behind on my graduation timeline. So, I’ve been forcing myself to continue, even though my grades have slipped from mostly As and a few Bs to barely passing.

Right now, I’m grappling with a mix of emotions and uncertainty. I’m not even sure if I enjoy my major anymore or if I see myself working in this field. Honestly, I feel really lost.

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed. First off, please know that taking a leave of absence is not a sign of failure; it’s a step towards prioritizing your mental health and well-being. Many people take breaks during their education for various reasons, and it can often lead to renewed clarity and purpose.

It’s great that you’ve recognized that you’re struggling and that it might be time to reassess your path. Sometimes stepping back can provide the perspective you need. Remember that it’s okay to not have everything figured out right now. College is as much about discovering who you are and what interests you as it is about academics.

Have you thought about talking to a counselor or academic advisor? They can help you explore your options and support you through this process. Also, consider reaching out to friends or family who may provide a listening ear. You’re definitely not alone in this, and many people have faced similar challenges.

Ultimately, it’s vital to prioritize your well-being and find a path that aligns with what truly makes you happy. Give yourself permission to take that time for you. You deserve it!
