FAFSA Refund Check

FAFSA Refund Check Update

I finally received my FAFSA refund check in the mail! It’s addressed to me, but my parents are saying they will deposit it because they covered my school tuition, so they believe they should get the refund. I’m confused—does the check belong to them or to me? Just to clarify, I didn’t contribute anything towards my tuition; my parents have paid for everything. Sorry if this sounds like a silly question!

  1. It’s not a dumb question at all! The FAFSA refund check is made out to you because technically, you’re the one who applied for financial aid and received the funds. Even though your parents paid the tuition and are now receiving the refund, the check being in your name means it is your responsibility.

In many cases, schools will allow the funds to be deposited in the student’s account, which can then be used for educational expenses, or in some cases, for personal use. It might be a good idea to have a conversation with your parents about the check. You can explain that it belongs to you, but perhaps you can agree to use it to offset your expenses since they have supported you throughout your education. Ultimately, it’s important that everyone is on the same page regarding the use of those funds. If you’re uncertain, you could also reach out to your school’s financial aid office for guidance on how to proceed!
