GPA Struggles

Hey everyone, just wanted to share my thoughts as a freshman.

I didn’t enroll in AP Human Geography, which I now regret. My weighted GPA stands at 4.13 (unweighted: 4.0), but it feels discouraging to see my peers who took the class earning higher GPAs. This really weighs on me mentally. Sometimes, I find myself wishing they wouldn’t do well, as that might give me a better chance to excel. I know this mindset isn’t healthy, but it’s hard to ignore.

I’ve already planned my sophomore classes to align with theirs, but many have opted for AP Bio or AP Psychology instead. I want to switch my courses to take AP Psych, but unfortunately, that’s not an option right now. It feels like I’m stuck and unable to catch up.

Ultimately, I aspire to have a high GPA and class ranking to gain admission to a prestigious university—hopefully an Ivy League school. With my peers currently ahead of me, I’m just feeling lost and unsure of what to do next. Any advice or support would really help!

  1. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed and frustrated, especially as a freshman navigating the complexities of high school and GPA rankings. It’s important to remember that each student’s path is unique, and comparing yourself to others can often lead to more stress than motivation.

Instead of focusing on what others are doing, try to shift your perspective towards your own goals and progress. Look at your GPA—4.13 weighted is quite impressive! Consider challenging yourself in other ways that align with your interests and strengths, rather than just aiming to match others.

If you’re interested in AP Psychology, perhaps you can discuss your options with a school counselor or explore how you can fit it into your schedule in the future. Keep in mind that a strong GPA is important, but so are extracurricular activities, personal development, and finding your passion.

Lastly, feeling competitive is totally natural, but wishing for others to fail isn’t a healthy mindset. Instead, try to channel any negative feelings into motivation for your own success. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination! Keep your head up, stay focused on your path, and you’ll find your way to where you want to be.
