How can you tell that a classmate actually wants to be your friend?

How can you tell if a classmate genuinely wants to be your friend?

Throughout my college journey, I’ve noticed that people rarely approach me first. I tend to keep to myself, which might give off an unfriendly vibe. However, there’s one classmate who has been quite friendly towards me.

He often greets me first, starts our conversations, says goodbye when he leaves, and even added me on LinkedIn—of all platforms! He seems like a genuinely chill person, but I can’t help but overthink things. It feels nice to finally have someone, especially a guy, take the initiative to connect with me. I think I’ll just see how things develop as the semester progresses.

  1. It’s great that you have someone who is reaching out and making an effort to connect with you! The signs you mentioned—him greeting you first, initiating conversations, saying goodbye, and even adding you on LinkedIn—definitely suggest that he is interested in building a friendship. People often don’t go out of their way to engage with someone unless they genuinely want to get to know them better.

It’s understandable to feel unsure about someone’s intentions, especially if it has been a while since you’ve experienced this kind of interaction. Take your time and see how the relationship develops. You might find that as the semester goes on, he continues to make an effort, which could be a great opportunity for you to open up as well. It can also be helpful to reciprocate his friendliness by engaging in conversations, maybe asking him about his interests, or even suggesting hanging out outside of class. Just remember that friendships often take time to build, so trust your instincts and enjoy the process!
