I have a science project that I’ll have to start soon. Any ideas?

I’m about to kick off my science project and could use some suggestions! I’m in second year (Irish) and had a few ideas, but my teacher mentioned they were too complicated. I’m looking for something simpler but still interesting. I did something similar with my geography project, just in a different area. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  1. Here are a few simple and fun science project ideas that should be suitable for second-year science. Feel free to adapt them based on your interests!

    1. Plant Growth Experiment: Investigate how different light sources (natural sunlight, fluorescent light, and LED) affect the growth of a common plant (like beans or peas). You can measure height, number of leaves, or overall health over a few weeks.

    2. Homemade Volcano: Create a volcano using baking soda and vinegar. You can experiment with different amounts of vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring to see how it affects the reaction. This is a great way to learn about chemical reactions in a hands-on way!

    3. Water Filtration System: Design a simple water purification system using materials like sand, gravel, and activated charcoal. Test how well it can filter dirty water and discuss the importance of clean drinking water.

    4. Egg Drop Challenge: Create a device to protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a certain height. You can experiment with different materials to see which design best protects the egg.

    5. Static Electricity: Explore static electricity by using a balloon to attract small pieces of paper or make your hair stand on end. You can discuss the science behind static charge and demonstrate different experiments.

    6. Crystal Growing: Grow sugar or salt crystals and document how long it takes for them to form under different conditions (like temperature or concentration).

    7. Solar Oven: Create a simple solar oven using a pizza box, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Test it by trying to cook s’mores or melt chocolate with the heat of the sun.

Hopefully, one of these ideas sparks your interest! Good luck with your project!

TestNav Experience At our school, we have a program called TestNav that helps determine students’ future class placements. However, the tests are quite lengthy and feel repetitive. Since 3rd grade, the format hasn’t changed at all. Does your school use a similar system, or is it just us?
