Is this unusual? At a school with 10,000 students, we’ve experienced a death every month. While I went to a university with 40,000 students for my undergrad, I’m now taking med school prerequisites at a local college, and the number of deaths this past year has been shocking. Is this common at other institutions? During my two years at my previous university, I only heard of one or two incidents, but here, it feels like we’re losing someone almost every month. It’s truly heartbreaking.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re experiencing this. It sounds incredibly tough and unsettling to be in an environment where there are frequent losses. While it’s difficult to compare institutions directly, a death every month in a school of 10,000 students does seem higher than what many would consider typical. There are many factors that could contribute to this, including the overall mental health climate, community issues, or even the demographic and social dynamics of the student body.
It’s important to take care of yourself and seek support if you’re feeling overwhelmed by this. Many colleges offer counseling services and support groups for students dealing with grief. It’s also totally okay to talk about how this is affecting you and your peers. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and sharing your thoughts can help process what’s happening.
