Math is Driving Me Crazy!

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice right now and honestly just need to vent about the stress I’m feeling.

Math has always been a struggle for me throughout high school. I used to think I was pretty good back in elementary school since the material wasn’t challenging. However, when I got to high school, the jump was huge, and I felt like I was completely lost.

Looking at my grades, you might think I’m doing well on paper (93, 92, 90), but for me, math feels like a rollercoaster ride! Right now, I’m sitting at a high 80 in my Grade 12 math class, but I’m really anxious that my mark will drop even more after my recent unit test.

I studied hard all week, spending over three hours each night, and I did all the practice work with my well-meaning (yet intimidating) mom by my side to help me. Still, the test turned out to be really tough, and my confidence has taken a hit. I keep making mistakes and can’t seem to learn from them, which makes me feel like I don’t fully grasp the concepts. The true/false questions were especially baffling, leaving me on edge and questioning everything. I scored an 83 on the last quiz, and I can’t afford to fall any lower.

Now, I’m starting my spring break feeling overwhelmed. Every time I try to do something productive, my mind keeps drifting back to that awful test. I don’t want to say I’m terrible at math, but I know I struggle. I’m good with the visual aspects, but calculations have always been a challenge for me, especially in this unit.

If there are any math whizzes out there, I’d love any tips on improving, how to relax, or really just anything that might help! I’m truly exhausted from this struggle. Thank you! 💔😩

  1. Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from. Math can be such a frustrating subject, especially when there’s so much pressure to perform well. First off, don’t be too hard on yourself—your grades are still solid, and it sounds like you’re putting in a huge effort to improve.

It’s great that you have a supportive mom to help you. Sometimes, just having someone to talk to about your struggles can make a huge difference. As for the test, it can be really disheartening to study hard and still feel unprepared. Remember that even the best students face setbacks—it’s a part of the learning process.

Here are a few tips that might help you out:

    1. Break Down the Concepts: Since you mentioned struggling with calculations but being good with the visual side, try to connect the visual concepts with the calculations. Drawing diagrams or using visual aids can often clarify things.

    2. Focus on Mistakes: Instead of feeling discouraged by mistakes, try to analyze them. Go through your previous tests and quizzes to see where you went wrong. Understanding why a particular answer was incorrect can help reinforce the concept.

    3. Practice, Practice, Practice: While you are already studying a lot, sometimes a change in resources can also help. Look for different study materials, like online videos or practice problems, that might explain concepts in a new light.

    4. Stay Calm: You mentioned your mind keeps going back to the test—try some relaxation techniques. Simple breathing exercises, meditation, or even a short walk can help clear your mind.

    5. Talk to Your Teacher: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher and express your concerns. They may have additional resources or tips specific to your learning style.

    6. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others: Everyone learns differently, and what works for someone else may not work for you. Focus on your own progress instead of how others are doing.

Lastly, remember that it’s okay not to be perfect! Everyone has subjects that challenge them. Just keep pushing through, and give yourself some grace. You’ve got this! If you ever need to vent or talk more about it, I’m here for you!
