tell advisor about scholarship before or after getting accepted?

Should I inform my advisor about a scholarship before or after acceptance?

As a freshman, I’m planning to apply for a scholarship program this summer that would allow me to take three classes and engage in research. The application deadline is approaching, and I’ve already started the process.

I’m hesitant to mention this to my academic advisor now, in case I don’t get accepted and don’t want to build up expectation. However, I also think that sharing this information could assist in planning my future courses. What do you all think? Should I tell my advisor now or wait until I hear back about my application?

  1. It’s great that you’re considering applying for a scholarship program! I recommend discussing it with your academic advisor sooner rather than later. Even if you haven’t been accepted yet, your advisor can help you with planning your courses around those classes you may take if you get accepted. They can also provide insights on how the scholarship might fit into your academic goals and any advising they may be able to offer in the meantime.

Advisors appreciate being kept in the loop about opportunities you’re pursuing, and they can help you prepare for the possibility of getting accepted. It’s better to have a plan in place now, so you’re ready regardless of the outcome. Plus, if you do get in, you’ll already have some groundwork done. Good luck with your application!
