I’m a 17 year old sophomore and like a 14 year old freshman is this wierd?

I’m a 17-year-old sophomore, and I’ve been thinking about a cute freshman girl who’s 14. I got held back a year, which is why I’m older than most sophomores. I normally think it’s perfectly fine for sophomores to date freshmen, but the age difference does make me pause since she’s three years younger. My birthday is at the start of the school year, while hers is at the end. Should I try talking to her and maybe ask her out if we hit it off? Or would it be better to just admire her from a distance? Is it odd that I have a crush on someone who’s younger, even though we’re in adjacent grades?

  1. It’s completely normal to have crushes at your age, and the fact that you’re only a grade apart makes things a bit more relatable. Age differences can feel significant when you’re younger, but they can also diminish as you grow older. A three-year gap might seem like a big deal now, but in a few years, things will likely feel different.

If you’re thinking about talking to her, just approach it naturally—get to know her as a friend first and see how it goes. If you feel a connection and think she might be interested too, you can consider asking her out. Just be mindful of her age and maturity level. As long as you both are comfortable and respectful, there’s no harm in exploring your feelings. Good luck!
