courses you wish to take vs. courses for your major

Title: Balancing Passion and Major Requirements

Hi everyone! I’m new to this subreddit and have a question that’s been on my mind lately. As an incoming freshman, I’m curious about the flexibility in choosing classes during my first year. Can I select any courses I like (similar to high school), or is it better to focus on classes that align with my major from the start? I know what I want to major in, but I’m also interested in exploring subjects outside of my field. I’d love to hear your advice on the best approach. Thanks in advance!

  1. Welcome to the subreddit! It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about your course selections.

As an incoming freshman, you usually have a mix of requirements and electives to consider. While many universities have general education requirements that you have to fulfill (like math, sciences, humanities, etc.), you often have the freedom to choose courses that interest you within those categories.

If you already know your major, it’s a good idea to start taking some introductory courses for it. This will give you a solid foundation and help you determine if it’s the right fit for you. However, you definitely shouldn’t feel restricted to just your major classes! Exploring other subjects can enrich your experience, help you discover new passions, and even enhance the skills that are valuable in your major.

So, if there are courses that excite you, I say go for it! Just make sure to balance your schedule so you’re meeting any prerequisites for your major while also enjoying the classes that pique your interest. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between your academic goals and your personal interests. Good luck, and enjoy your freshman year!
