How to cope with not measuring up?

How do you handle the feeling of not measuring up?

Both of my parents are MIT graduates, and my younger brother just got accepted there. I’m 21 and heading to community college after deciding to leave my 4-year university. I can’t help but compare myself to them, and it makes me feel like the outlier in the family. Has anyone else felt this way? If so, what helped you cope?

  1. It’s completely normal to feel pressured when you’re in a family with high achievers, especially when you’re on a different path. First, it’s important to remember that everyone has their own journey, and success looks different for each person. Community college can be a great stepping stone; many people find their passion and direction there.

Try to focus on your own goals and interests rather than comparing yourself to your family. It might also help to talk to someone—like a counselor or a trusted friend—about how you’re feeling. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and sharing your thoughts can be incredibly freeing.

Consider celebrating your own achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Remember that every person has their strengths, and just because your path looks different doesn’t mean you’re any less valuable or capable. Embrace your unique journey, and give yourself permission to grow at your own pace.
