What’s an unexpected class you took for your major?
I’m currently majoring in Dental Hygiene, and at my college, we have a summer semester that lasts about 7 to 8 weeks, but not all classes are available during that time. Luckily, my state has a program that offers free college to anyone over 25, with the requirement that you take at least 6 credits each semester. This spring semester, I’m enrolled in Psychology and College Writing.
For the upcoming summer semester, I’ve decided to take three classes since it’s shorter and not all subjects are offered. I need to complete a biology course for my degree, so I chose Intro to Nutrition. To balance my schedule without overloading myself with difficult classes, I also picked Early Childhood Administration and Medical Ethics. The Early Childhood Administration class was a bit of a surprise choice for me, but I’m really looking forward to it!

Thinking back on my experience, one unexpected class I took was “Philosophy of Science.” Initially, I was hesitant, but it turned out to be one of the most eye-opening courses I’ve ever had. It helped me think critically about the scientific principles and practices that underlie so many fields, including healthcare. The discussions about ethics and the nature of scientific inquiry were surprisingly relevant to my major.
As for the classes you mentioned, I haven’t taken “Intro to Nutrition,” but I’ve heard it’s a solid foundation for anyone in the health field, giving insights into how nutrition impacts overall health—which is definitely relevant in Dental Hygiene. “Medical Ethics” is also crucial; it’s fascinating to learn about the ethical dilemmas faced in the medical field—it really makes you think about the moral responsibilities we have as future healthcare professionals.
I find “Early Childhood Administration” to be an interesting choice! It sounds like a unique intersection between healthcare and education, and I think understanding how to manage early childhood settings might give you some valuable skills in patient communication and community health outreach.
