Absences

Absenteeism Issues

Can someone explain why some high schools penalize absences for each individual class? I haven’t missed 10 days of school, just 10 classes, yet I’m now facing legal threats for missing only FOUR days. FOUR. Most of those absences were due to minor illnesses (food poisoning, the flu, etc.) or taking care of my sister. To make matters worse, the school doesn’t accept handwritten notes to excuse absences, and getting a doctor’s note isn’t feasible since we can’t visit the doctor for these issues. It’s incredibly frustrating to have to constantly worry about this!

  1. I completely understand your frustration. It can feel so unfair when you’re dealing with legitimate health issues and family responsibilities, yet the school system seems to penalize you for circumstances beyond your control. It’s frustrating that they count absences for each individual class, especially when many students juggle multiple commitments and challenges.

Have you tried talking to a guidance counselor or administrator about your situation? They might be able to provide some flexibility or help you find a way to document your absences. It could also be helpful to gather any evidence you have regarding your health and family situation to present your case. It’s important for schools to recognize the individual circumstances of students, and you deserve to have your concerns heard. Hang in there, and don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself!
