Seeking Course Advice for Med School Aspirations

Hello everyone! I’m reaching out to see if anyone has some insights on high school course selection, especially for those considering a future in medicine.

I’m currently a freshman and aspiring to become a neurosurgeon. For my sophomore year, I chose to enroll in AP Computer Science Principles, thinking that understanding AI will be increasingly important in fields like neuroscience. However, my parents are having second thoughts about this choice, and it’s left me wondering if I’m on the right path.

While I understand that many might recommend prioritizing core STEM subjects, I want to mention that I took AP Biology in my freshman year and I have plans to take AP Chemistry and Algebra 2 next year. I’m also doing well academically and preparing for the PSAT.

I would really appreciate any advice or perspectives you might have! Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you’re on a great track, and it’s awesome that you have a clear goal in mind! You’re correct that AI and computer science are becoming increasingly important in the medical field, including neuroscience. Taking AP Computer Science Principles can provide you with valuable skills that may set you apart later on, especially in a rapidly evolving field like medicine.

While core STEM classes are indeed critical for med school (your AP Bio, AP Chem, and math courses are very important), having a diverse skill set is also beneficial. Computer science can enhance your analytical and problem-solving abilities, which are essential in medicine. Plus, understanding technology can be a huge advantage as healthcare continues to integrate more with AI and data analysis.

If you’re feeling uncertain, consider discussing your course choices with a school counselor or a teacher you trust. They can provide personalized advice based on your school’s offerings and your long-term goals.

Ultimately, choose courses that interest you and align with your aspirations, but don’t be afraid to take something a bit different, like AP Computer Science Principles. It could be a great complement to your science background! Stay focused on your academic performance overall, and remember, med schools look at a well-rounded applicant, not just grades in science classes. Good luck, and keep pursuing your passion for medicine!

Here’s a quick summary of what’s been happening: So, my friends and I have kicked off a trend at school where we’ve created a sort of mock fraternity and sorority, which has inspired other groups to start their own Greek-like organizations. We even transformed a few classrooms into club-like spaces for after-school gatherings! And before […]
