am I the problem? (school drama?)

Am I the problem here? (School drama alert!)

So, here’s the situation: there’s a lot of buzz at our school about formal dresses right now. All my friends are busy picking out their gowns, deciding on colors, and all that jazz. I thought it would be helpful to create an account where students can share the formal dresses they’ve chosen, to avoid any duplicates on the big day. I made this account four days ago, and then today, after dance class, I saw a new account pop up that seemed to have the same idea. I figured they must have created it recently since I’d never seen it before.

However, they messaged me, claiming “my account is better.” At first, I brushed it off, but then they asked me who was behind my account. I didn’t want to disclose my identity, as I felt it would distract from the reason I started the account. They insisted it didn’t matter, but kept questioning me about it. Soon after, another girl chimed in, asking the same thing and implied the new account was superior.

This other account even made assumptions about my identity, guessing I was someone whose name starts with “M,” which added to my anxiety. In the midst of this, I tried to stay calm and play it cool. When one of the girls jokingly called me a “funny seesaw,” I thought it was silly, but I still wanted to get clarity on who they were talking about.

Eventually, they confirmed they were part of a group of three popular girls known for being a bit mean, which didn’t help my situation. In the end, I decided to avoid any potential drama by offering to delete my account and let the other account take over the dress management. They seemed pleased with that and I followed through.

So, what do you think? Am I the one causing drama, or are they just being unnecessarily difficult over something that was meant to be helpful? For context, they were really pushing for me to reveal my identity, but I never committed to doing so. Meanwhile, they seem to have the looks and popularity factor on their side, while I’m more of an extroverted presence who’s known for my personality rather than my appearance. Just trying to figure out if I handled this the right way!

  1. It sounds like you found yourself in a pretty complicated situation! From what you’ve shared, it seems like you had a genuine and helpful intention in creating that account for formal dresses, and it was unfortunate that it turned into a source of drama.

You’re not the drama here; it seems like the other girls were more focused on competition and their own social standing than on supporting a good idea. It’s totally understandable that you didn’t want to reveal your identity; anonymity can help keep the focus on the project itself rather than personal dynamics.

Deleting the account might have seemed like the easiest way to avoid conflict, but it’s important to remember that creating a supportive community is a positive thing, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to step back just because a few people were being confrontational. If you ever feel comfortable, you might consider restarting the account or discussing it with your friends to see if they’d support you in standing your ground.

Ultimately, focus on what you feel is right, and don’t let others’ opinions dictate your actions. You did nothing wrong!
