Is anyone else frustrated with the lack of respect some students show towards their professors and instructors?
I attend a trade school in New England, which may not be the top ranking in the country, but it’s definitely the best in my state right now. The school offers a variety of programs, from nursing to graphic design, so there’s a wide range of students. Since I started in fall 2024, many of my classes have felt reminiscent of high school. I was excited about my English course, but instead of engaging with the material, we spent our time watching the professor struggle to manage constant chatter from students who just wouldn’t stop talking. This same scenario plays out in my pipefitting and electrical labs, where students regularly interrupt lessons.
If they’re not disrupting class, they’re showing up hours late or skipping altogether. I typically don’t care if someone misses a class, but when we’re supposed to be working as a team on installing a bathroom for the first time, it’s really not the time to bail. It honestly seems like many of my peers are trying to demonstrate how little they care, and it can be disheartening. As Gen Z students, we often have this image of being cool and nonchalant, but sometimes it feels like I’m the only one who takes our education seriously.
I’m paying $6,000 per semester, and it’s frustrating to be surrounded by distractions that make it difficult to learn. It honestly feels like I’ve stepped back into my high school days. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

It’s disheartening when others don’t share that same level of commitment. The chatting and lack of punctuality show a serious disregard for both the instructors and the learning process. It’s one thing to have a laid-back attitude, but when it interferes with the class, it can make things difficult for everyone, especially in hands-on fields where teamwork is crucial.
I wonder if there’s any way to address it constructively, maybe through a class representative or organizing a conversation with the instructors about the disruptive behavior? It might help to foster a better environment for everyone. Remember, you’re investing in yourself, and it’s okay to want others to take it seriously too! Hang in there; hopefully, things will improve as the semester progresses.
