Degree Research Project Help Needed!

Hi everyone! I’m a third-year Graphic Design student currently researching Filipino food culture. I’m particularly interested in comparing cooking methods used in the Philippines with those in the United States. My research will focus on factors like the ingredients used and the specific regions of the Philippines where the dishes originate.

I’ve gathered information from various articles and YouTube videos and plan to analyze cooking techniques from different historical periods: pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial (examining what aspects have remained the same and what has changed).

Unfortunately, my family has been hesitant to connect me with relatives who could assist with this project. If you or anyone you know would be willing to help, I would greatly appreciate it!

For privacy and consistency, there’s no need for participants to speak or show their faces—just a demonstration of the cooking preparation and ingredients used would be perfect.

Thank you so much for your support!

  1. Hi there! Your project sounds fascinating, and it’s great that you’re diving deep into Filipino food culture. I can understand how it might be challenging to gather contacts, especially when it comes to family.

While I can’t connect you directly with individuals, I suggest trying a few methods to find potential participants:

    1. Social Media Groups: Look for Filipino communities on platforms like Facebook or Reddit. There are often groups dedicated to Filipino cooking or culture where you can find volunteers willing to share their cooking methods.

    2. Local Filipino Restaurants: Reach out to Filipino restaurants in your area. Chefs or cooks may be willing to share their techniques, and you might be able to record them preparing traditional dishes.

    3. Cooking Classes: Consider attending or contacting local Filipino cooking classes. Instructors might be open to sharing their knowledge and could connect you with students or guests willing to participate.

    4. Community Events: Look for local Filipino cultural festivals or events. These gatherings are great opportunities to meet people passionate about their food heritage, and some might be open to sharing their cooking methods for your project.

    5. University Connections: Connect with professors or advisors who may have contacts in the Filipino community. They might know someone who would be willing to help.

    6. University or Local Library Archives: Check if there are any culinary history resources available that focus on Filipino cuisine. This can provide context and depth for your comparisons.

If you approach people with your clear purpose and respect for their time and privacy, many may be willing to assist you. Good luck with your research, and I hope you find some great resources!
