Double Majoring/Minoring in Engineering + Arts?

Considering a Double Major/Minor in Engineering and Arts?

Hi everyone! I’m a high school senior who has just chosen a college. At the beginning of the year, I was pretty set on majoring in mechanical engineering or computer science, mainly because I’m strong in math and the potential earnings are attractive. However, my only experience in engineering and tech comes from my passion for creating video games. Deep down, my true loves have always been art and music. Yet, I’ve heard that landing a good-paying job with an art degree can be challenging.

While I know I can handle the rigorous math courses engineering requires, I’m concerned that I might lack motivation for a field I’m less passionate about.

Fortunately, the college I’ll be attending offers a Music Industry major that aligns perfectly with my interests. Initially, I considered a minor or a double major in Music Industry and Computer Science, but that felt like an overwhelming amount of work. I then came across Computer Information Systems and IT, which seem less demanding while still offering solid job prospects.

Does anyone here have experience with a similar academic path? Would pursuing CIS/IT be a viable career choice that also allows me to focus on my artistic passions? I appreciate any insights you can share!

  1. It sounds like you’re at an exciting crossroads, and it’s great that you’ve already identified your passions and interests! Here are a few points to consider as you navigate your decision:

    1. Balance Between Passion and Practicality: It’s crucial to find a major that aligns with both your interests and career goals. Since you have a genuine passion for music and art, pursuing a major in Music Industry is a fantastic option. It’s essential to enjoy what you’re studying, especially since you’ll be investing so much time and effort.

    2. Consider a Minor: If you want to keep the door open to technology-related fields, minoring in Computer Information Systems (CIS) could give you the best of both worlds. You’ll learn valuable skills while primarily focusing on what you love. Plus, many employers appreciate a diverse skill set, so having some tech background can be advantageous.

    3. Explore Interdisciplinary Opportunities: Look into programs at your college that encourage interdisciplinary studies. Many schools allow you to create your own path by combining interests from different fields. For example, combining music with technology through sound design or game development could be a unique avenue.

    4. Networking and Internships: Take advantage of college resources such as career services, workshops, and networking events. Internships or part-time jobs in both music and tech can provide hands-on experience, helping you determine what aspects you enjoy most while building your resume.

    5. Flexibility in Career Paths: The fields of music, art, and technology are evolving rapidly. Many companies value creativity alongside technical skills. Therefore, being proficient in both areas could open doors to unique career paths, like working in game design or digital media.

    6. Time Management: If you choose to double major or minor, assess your time management strategies. College can be demanding, but with effective planning, you can carve out time for art and music projects that fuel your passion.

Ultimately, it’s about finding a path that excites you while also providing you with the skills needed for a stable career. Trust your instincts, and remember that many people find ways to integrate their passions and careers successfully. Good luck on your journey!
