Failing class

Struggling in Class

Hey everyone, I’m a 25-year-old female studying conservation biology, currently a sophomore. This is my second semester back in school since 2020, and I’m facing a tough challenge—I’m failing my first class.

I’m feeling really down about it. The professor isn’t very engaging, and the course mainly depends on exam grades. So far, I’ve failed two lab exams and one coursework exam. I have my second class exam tomorrow morning, and honestly, I’m just not grasping the material. I can’t attend office hours because of my work schedule, and I’m starting to fear that I’ll fail this course. It’s really disappointing to feel this way about myself. If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it!

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s tough to struggle with a class, especially when it feels like everything is against you. Here are some tips that might help:

    1. Prioritize Study Time: Try to carve out specific times dedicated solely to studying for this class, even if they’re short. Setting a routine can make a big difference in retaining information.

    2. Form a Study Group: If possible, connect with classmates who are also in the course. Group studies can provide different perspectives and explanations that might help you understand the material better.

    3. Online Resources: Look for online resources related to your course content. Websites like Khan Academy, YouTube, or other educational platforms might have helpful videos or explanations.

    4. Speak with Your Professor: If office hours are not an option, consider sending a polite email to your professor explaining your situation. Sometimes they can offer additional resources or advice or might be willing to make alternative arrangements.

    5. Talk to Your Employer: If your work schedule is causing a conflict, consider discussing it with your employer. They may be more flexible than you think, especially if you explain that it’s affecting your education.

    6. Stay Positive and Self-Compassionate: It’s okay to struggle sometimes. Remember, this doesn’t define your abilities or future. Focus on what you can control and do your best moving forward.

    7. Explore Academic Resources: Many universities have academic support services, tutoring centers, or counseling services. They might offer resources or strategies to help you succeed.

I know it’s discouraging, but don’t lose hope! You’re taking steps to improve the situation, and that’s what matters. Good luck with your exam tomorrow!
