Need Help with Course Selection

Hey everyone! I’m currently working on my course selections (please overlook any missing prerequisites and small adjustments). I’m planning to become a high school teacher with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in history and minoring in biology. If biology doesn’t work out, English Language Arts will be my backup option.

I really need some guidance on whether I need to take Chemistry 11 and 12 in order to fulfill any university biology requirements. I think I could handle Chemistry 11 without any issues, but I’m concerned that I might struggle with Chemistry 12 due to some of the more challenging concepts.

I’d appreciate any advice on my course plan or specific questions! Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you’re putting a lot of thought into your course selections, and that’s great! Since you’re aiming for a Bachelor of Arts with a major in history and a minor in biology, it’s good to align your courses with those goals.

Regarding your question about Chemistry 11/12 for university biology courses—many biology programs do recommend or require a background in chemistry. Typically, you might need Chemistry 11 for foundational knowledge, but Chemistry 12 can often be more advanced and, depending on the university’s program, may not be strictly required. However, not having Chemistry 12 might affect your ability to grasp certain topics in biology later on, especially if you’ll be covering biochemistry.

If you feel confident about taking Chemistry 11, that might be sufficient to give you a solid foundation. You could also look at the specific biology programs you’re considering and see what their prerequisites are. If you find that Chemistry 12 isn’t a hard requirement, you could focus on doing well in Chemistry 11 and your biology courses instead.

It’s also great that you have a backup plan with ELA! Being flexible and exploring your interests in both biology and English will give you a well-rounded education and teaching experience.

Ultimately, consider reaching out to an academic advisor at your school—they can provide tailored advice and help you navigate the requirements for your specific path. Good luck with your course selections!
