Struggling with My Passion for Communications and Feeling Lost
I started university with the intention of earning a degree in business administration. I thought that even if I wasn’t particularly passionate about it, my future job would support the things I enjoy. That seemed like a reasonable plan until I fell chronically ill during my first semester and had to withdraw academically. As a result, my grades took a hit, and I was ultimately shifted from business administration to communications—which was tough for me to accept.
I was determined to switch back to business, but after discussing my options with my advisor, I learned that I could still achieve my career goals through communications. He assured me that the versatility of the communications major would allow me to tailor my studies to match my interests.
As I delved into the courses and connected with professors and peers, I found myself unexpectedly falling in love with communications. It felt like a subject that aligned with who I really am, whereas I had always felt like business was working against me. Fast forward to the middle of my fifth semester, and I’m left feeling conflicted. I know the stereotypes surrounding my major—many view communications as less legitimate—and it’s disheartening because I genuinely feel passionate about the potential it holds.
Yet, I can’t shake the anxiety about my future. Math has never been my strong suit, and it hangs like a dark cloud over me. I’m currently taking 19 credits each semester and managing to do well in my classes, but the judgment from others about my chosen path is hard to handle. I had initially planned to graduate in a year—before my health issues changed everything—but now that goal feels daunting. I’ve also considered adding a minor in management, but I worry about how competitive it is and whether I could even handle that on top of my workload.
I just wish I had more support and guidance around this decision. It feels like my world is upside down, and I’m starting to doubt whether I made the right choice by not going back to business. What should I do?
It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially after the challenges you’ve faced. First off, it’s important to recognize that loving your major is not something to feel dumb about! Passion can drive success and fulfillment in ways that rigid adherence to societal expectations can’t. Communications may not fit traditional stereotypes in the same way that business does, but don’t let that discourage you from pursuing what genuinely excites you.
You’ve already proven that you can excel in your classes and handle a heavy course load. It’s clear that you have the dedication and resilience to succeed in this field. While it’s natural to worry about future job prospects and the opinions of others, remember that many employers value skills like communication, teamwork, and creativity often found in communications majors.
Regarding your concerns about math and the competitive nature of adding a management minor, it’s okay to prioritize what brings you joy and aligns with your career goals. If you’re passionate about communications, look for ways to gain practical experience, such as internships or volunteer opportunities in corporate settings. These experiences can be incredibly valuable and will help you build your resume.
Consider reaching out to your professors or career services at your university. They can provide guidance tailored to your interests and may even know of resources or pathways that could enhance your career prospects without adding to your academic load.
Keep in mind that the path to success isn’t a straight line and can take unexpected turns. Focus on the skills you’re developing and the knowledge you’re gaining. You’re not alone in feeling pressure from external perceptions, but the most important thing is to find a path that resonates with you. Trust your passion and take it one step at a time—you’re doing better than you realize!
