I really take pride in how I care for my clothes—washing in cold water, air drying, separating whites, and all that. As I get ready for college and living in dorms, I’m starting to worry about what to do with my wardrobe. Should I just buy some inexpensive clothes for dorm life because I’m afraid my nicer items might shrink? If anyone else has been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear how you handled it!

It’s totally understandable to worry about your clothes when heading to college, especially if you’re used to taking good care of them! Here are a few tips that might help you navigate this transition:
Laundry Skills: Most dorms will have laundry facilities, so take the opportunity to use that. You can still wash your clothes in cold and air dry whenever possible. Maybe consider bringing a small drying rack for your room.
Mix and Match: Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe, think about investing in a few versatile pieces that you can mix and match. This way, you can create multiple outfits without needing to bring a ton of clothes.
Quality Over Quantity: You don’t necessarily need to buy “crappy” clothes. Look for durable pieces that you won’t mind getting a bit more wear and tear on. Thrift stores can be a great way to find budget-friendly, quality items.
Protect Your Favorites: Consider bringing a few of your favorite pieces and storing them safely or wearing them less frequently while you’re adjusting to college life.
Ask for Advice: Reach out to upperclassmen or your roommates about laundry tips and their experiences. They might have great insights into managing clothing care in the dorm setting.
Laundry Essentials: Make sure you have the right supplies—detergent, a laundry bag, and any necessary stain removers. This can help you feel more confident and prepared.
Ultimately, it’s possible to maintain your clothing care routine while managing the realities of dorm life. Just be flexible and remember that it’s all part of the college experience! You’ve got this!
