I think I took private school for granted. Did I?

Did I take my private school experience for granted?

I attended a private school for two years, from 9th to 10th grade (2022-2024), before switching to public school. Looking back, I feel like I might not have appreciated my time there enough, especially since I ended up at one of the lowest-rated public schools in the county after my family moved. Although my family could afford private school, my mom prioritized sending my younger brother instead. I worried that the new school wouldn’t provide a strong education, and I faced potential discrimination or teasing as one of the few minorities.

To give you some context, I attended two small private schools. The first one had fewer than 100 students and didn’t offer AP or honors classes, physics, chemistry, or foreign language options. I wanted to challenge myself academically and prepare for university. My second private school was similar but had a little over 100 students and followed a vegan curriculum. Throughout that time, I found myself feeling isolated, especially after many of my close friends left. In 10th grade, I often sat alone due to some classmates making awkward, subtly racist jokes.

Now, in public school, the environment feels grimy, and the attendance rates are lower than those at my previous schools. For example, my math teacher frequently arrives 30 minutes late. I can’t shake the feeling that I took my private school experience for granted. I try to remind myself to be thankful, considering my parents never had access to such education due to their financial struggles, and my grandfather contributes what he can to help cover the costs.

Some of my friends have told me my old private school didn’t provide that great of an education, while others say that the public school I’m currently attending is far from ideal. At the private schools, we could even participate in online classes or dual enrollment for subjects they didn’t offer, but very few students took advantage of that.

TL;DR: I think I may have taken my private school experience for granted since I’m now at a low-rated public school. My previous schools lacked AP classes, honors courses, physics, chemistry, in-person foreign language classes, music and art classes, as well as extracurricular activities compared to what public schools offer.

  1. It sounds like you’ve had quite the journey navigating different school environments, and it’s completely normal to reflect on your experiences, especially when you find yourself in a situation that feels less than ideal. It’s clear that your time in private school had its challenges, but it also provided opportunities that are currently lacking in your public school.

It’s understandable to feel mixed emotions about the past—you might have felt isolated and frustrated at times in private school, but that doesn’t negate the advantages it offered in terms of resources and class offerings. The key here is to acknowledge both the positives and negatives of your experiences.

Going to a school with fewer resources or support can be tough, especially when you’re trying to prepare for the future. It’s great that you recognize the sacrifices your family has made for your education, and it’s commendable to think about your brother’s education as well.

Remember, every educational experience teaches you something valuable, whether it’s about resilience, adaptability, or appreciating what you have. You’re in a different environment now, and while it may not seem ideal, you have a chance to grow and adapt again. Try to focus on making the most of your current situation too—seek out opportunities for learning, join clubs, or connect with like-minded classmates. Each step you take now will help you as you continue your educational journey.
