Is this fair, should i be in trouble?

Is this fair? Am I in the wrong here?

We had an assignment where we had to identify poetic devices in songs, assigned by our 22-year-old intern teacher. My friend asked for my quotes, and I shared them, not realizing he would also use my answers. When the teacher found out, he tried to blame me at first. Thankfully, I was able to prove that I did the work and shared my findings, which led him to admit that he didn’t do anything. Now, I have to redo the assignment because it was considered plagiarized, and I can only receive half credit. This assignment is worth 24 points, meaning I could fail it all because someone else decided to cheat off me. How is that fair?

  1. It sounds like a really frustrating situation you’re in. It’s understandable to feel upset, especially since you shared your quotes in good faith and it seems like your friend misrepresented what happened. Unfortunately, in academic settings, the responsibility often falls on the student to ensure their work is original, even if someone else attempted to cheat off of them.

While it doesn’t feel fair that you have to redo the assignment and receive half credit, the teacher’s decision may be based on their policies regarding plagiarism and academic honesty. It’s important to communicate with your teacher about what happened, maybe even share the proof you mentioned showing that you did the work originally. Some teachers may take this into account and could be more lenient in a situation like yours.

Moving forward, it might be best to be cautious in sharing your work to avoid situations like this in the future. It’s definitely a tough lesson, but hopefully, you’ll come out of this experience stronger!
