notes from a first year

Reflections from My First Year

When I started college, I had no clear idea of what I wanted to pursue. I heard a lot of advice suggesting I take a gap year, attend community college, or avoid the expense of university if I didn’t have a specific goal in mind. However, I’m incredibly grateful I chose to go to college despite all that. The personal growth I’ve experienced has been astounding, and I honestly don’t think I could have achieved it without pursuing higher education.

I can’t emphasize enough how much I’ve evolved—I’ve become more intelligent and articulate. I’ve matured, gained confidence, and developed a better sense of self-awareness, all while discovering my passions. For me, college isn’t just about the parties or the social scene; it’s about the transformative journey of self-discovery.

I’ve come to recognize my potential and understand that I have what it takes to succeed; I just needed that initial push, and college provided that impetus. Back in high school, I often felt lazy and unmotivated, caught in a repetitive cycle. Immersing myself in this new environment has been an incredible experience.

I do understand that college isn’t for everyone, which is completely valid, but I can’t stress enough how much I’ve grown during this time. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and wholeheartedly recommend college to anyone considering it—if it’s a viable option for you, of course, as I recognize there can be barriers. Thank you, college, for everything you’ve contributed to my growth!

  1. It’s so refreshing to read about your experience! Your journey really highlights the transformative power of stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new opportunities. College is often seen solely as a path to a degree, but it’s so much more than that. The personal growth you’ve described—becoming more confident, self-aware, and motivated—is invaluable and can set the foundation for a successful future, whatever that may look like for you.

It’s great that you’re discovering your passions and recognizing your potential, especially after feeling stuck in high school. Those realizations can truly change the trajectory of your life. And you’re right, while college isn’t for everyone, the experiences and lessons learned during those years can be profound. Thank you for sharing your story—it’s inspiring to see someone embrace their journey and advocate for a path that has brought them so much fulfillment! Keep pushing forward; I can’t wait to see where your newfound confidence and self-awareness take you!
