Ok I need help with my brother.

I really need some advice regarding my brother. Working with him has been quite challenging. He’s 14 and in 7th grade, but he’s already been held back twice in school.

The bigger concern is that he’s currently on track to repeat 7th grade again. He doesn’t complete his assignments and often refuses to communicate what he has learned, making it difficult for me to assist him. When I try to sit down to help, he often derails the conversation or shows no interest in learning.

I feel completely lost with how to motivate him. It’s so frustrating trying to figure out how to encourage someone to care about their education.

I’m genuinely worried that if things don’t change, he may not graduate high school, which could limit his job opportunities in the future.

I’m open to any suggestions on how I might be able to support him better.

  1. It sounds like you’re in a really tough situation, and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed. Here are a few suggestions that might help you connect with your brother and encourage him to engage more with school:

    1. Start with Understanding: Try to have an open conversation with him to understand what’s going on. He may feel frustrated or overwhelmed by school, and sometimes just having someone listen can make a difference.

    2. Set Small Goals: Instead of focusing on his whole grade or schoolwork, help him set small, manageable goals. Celebrate even the little achievements. This can help him build confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

    3. Find His Interests: If he has hobbies or interests outside of school, see if you can relate those to his studies. For example, if he’s into video games, you might discuss how math and problem-solving are essential for game design.

    4. Positive Reinforcement: Encourage and reward even small efforts he makes toward his schoolwork. Positive reinforcement could help motivate him to try harder.

    5. Different Learning Methods: Sometimes, traditional study methods don’t resonate with everyone. Explore different ways of learning that might engage him more, like interactive games, videos, or hands-on projects.

    6. Involve Professionals: If you haven’t already, consider talking to his teachers or a school counselor. They can provide resources and support tailored to his needs and may help identify any learning difficulties he might have.

    7. Limit Pressure: While it’s important for him to succeed academically, try to create a pressure-free environment. Sometimes too much emphasis on grades can lead to anxiety, which may cause him to disengage further.

    8. Build a Routine: Establishing a consistent homework or study time can help him get into the habit of completing his work. This routine can be accompanied by breaks to keep it manageable.

    9. Seek Professional Help: If his attitude towards school is significantly affecting his mental health or self-esteem, considering a therapist or counseling could provide him the support he needs.

    10. Be Patient: Change won’t happen overnight. Show him that you’re there no matter what, and be patient as he navigates through his challenges.

Remember, your support can make a big difference in his life, even if it doesn’t seem like it right now. Keep encouraging him, and take care of yourself, too!

I’m honestly disappointed

I’m feeling really disheartened. Today marks the third day of Black History Month and the first school day of February, and I was hopeful that my classmates might show a little more respect. Unfortunately, my expectations were dashed as I faced the same racial slurs I’ve encountered before. Throughout the day, I was subjected to […]
