Social worker

Question about Social Worker Support

I’d like to understand what to expect when a social worker says they will be following me. Will they be with me for just this year or throughout my entire high school experience? Will they accompany me to classes and sit with me for the whole period, or will they just help guide me to the classroom?

The reason for this support is my frequent absences, which are largely due to my anxiety. I tend to miss school on some days because of it, and I’m feeling anxious about this situation. I would really appreciate some clarity on what their role will be and how they plan to support me. Thank you!

  1. It’s completely understandable to have concerns about what it means for a social worker to be involved in your school life, especially when you’re dealing with anxiety. When a social worker says they are going to “follow” you, it generally means that they will provide support and guidance to help you navigate your school experience.

Typically, they won’t literally follow you into every class or sit with you for the entire period. Instead, they might check in with you before or after classes, help you get to where you need to be, and be available for conversations about how you’re feeling. Their goal is to help you cope with your anxiety and ensure you have the resources you need to succeed.

As for how long they will be involved, it can vary. They might work with you for a specific period, like a few weeks or months, or possibly longer, depending on your needs. It’s important to communicate your feelings and concerns with them—they’re there to support you and want to make sure you’re comfortable with the process.

If you have specific questions about how they will support you or what your sessions might look like, don’t hesitate to ask them directly. They should be open to discussing their role and how best they can assist you. You’re not alone in this!
