Which High School Should I Pick?

Choosing the Right High School: A Tough Decision

I find myself torn between two high schools, which I’ll refer to as A and B. School A feels like the safe choice; most of my friends are going there, I know the teachers and coaches, the sports program is impressive, I’ve had the chance to shadow there, I take morning math classes there, and it’s just a quick 5-minute commute. On the other hand, school B is more of a leap into the unknown. I don’t know anyone there, they don’t offer shadowing opportunities, their sports program isn’t as strong, and it’s a 30-minute drive.

You might be thinking, “Why not just go with school A?” Believe me, I’ve been wrestling with that question. Here’s where I’m feeling conflicted: School A is a Roman Catholic high school, while B is a Selective Enrollment College Prep school that boasts a national ranking. A offers 25 AP courses, while B provides 30. All classes at B are either honors, AP, or dual credit, whereas A has a variety of classes catering to different levels. Plus, even with a scholarship, A is $8,000 more expensive than B.

Academically, I have a 4.0 GPA and typically score in the 99th percentile in both math and English. A feels like the safer and more reliable choice, but I can’t shake the feeling that I might connect better with the students at B.

I’m open to questions about either school or my academic background, as I realize I haven’t provided all the details. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough but exciting position, and it’s great that you’re weighing your options carefully! Both School A and School B have their merits and drawbacks, so let’s consider some factors that might help you make your decision:

    1. Academic Fit: Since you have a strong academic record, the rigorous curriculum at School B may be a good fit for you, especially if you thrive in advanced classes. Consider how you learn best and whether you prefer a more competitive environment or a more familiar one with friends.

    2. Social Dynamics: High school can have a huge impact on your social life. While School A offers the comfort of friends and a support system, School B could provide the chance to meet new people and make new friends. Think about what type of environment would make you feel more fulfilled socially.

    3. Long-Term Goals: Reflect on your future academic and career goals. If School B’s selective enrollment and college prep focus aligns better with your aspirations or the schools you want to apply to later, it might be worth considering.

    4. Costs: The financial difference is significant. Think about how that $8,000 will impact your family and your options in college down the line. If School B provides a strong education without the hefty price tag, that might be a crucial factor.

    5. Extracurriculars: While you mentioned School A has a great sports program, consider what extracurricular activities matter to you. If you have interests outside of sports, see which school offers those opportunities that align with your passions.

    6. Your Gut Feeling: Sometimes, it comes down to how you feel about each option. Do you feel excited about the thought of attending one school over the other? Trust your instincts—they can be a powerful indicator of which choice will make you happiest.

Ultimately, there’s no wrong choice here—both schools offer valuable experiences. It might also be helpful to discuss this with trusted adults or mentors who know you well and can offer insights based on their own experiences. Good luck with your decision!
