Navigating the Transition to College: Anxiety, Excitement, and the Path Forward
Starting a new chapter in higher education can be as exhilarating as it is overwhelming. Recently, I had my university orientation, and I find myself caught between anticipation and a looming sense of stress. I’m a 21-year-old female heading to a city I’ve only visited once, far from the familiar comfort of home.
As a psychology major with aspirations for graduate school, I’ve always been passionate about learning and personal growth. I’m also known among my peers as someone deeply involved in campus life—participating in numerous clubs and organizations. Even during my time at community college, I managed a busy schedule, juggling roles in Student Media, student government, PTK, event organization, SkillsUSA, and working up to 20 hours per week. I’ve always thrived on being busy, a trait I attribute to my ADHD, which prompts my brain to jump into projects impulsively. While I often struggle with procrastination and burnout, I take pride in completing my tasks eventually.
As I prepare to leave for university, I realize I’m bringing my high-energy approach—and my stress—along with me. Burnout has been a constant companion for some time now, making this transition even more challenging. Yet, despite the nerves and fatigue, I am genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead: meeting new people, delving into research, and expanding my knowledge.
However, orientation has been a whirlwind of information, leading to an inevitable state of overwhelm. Questions flood my mind: Should I pursue internships now? Is volunteering worthwhile? Which organizations should I join? How proactive should I be? And perhaps most embarrassingly, why am I the only one attending all the optional sessions?
I’ve scheduled a session with my therapist on Wednesday, but I would also love to hear from those who have navigated this journey longer than I have—preferably individuals who might share my inclination for overcommitment. Any practical advice on balancing academics and extracurricular activities would be invaluable. Ultimately, I wonder: Are all these efforts worth it in the grand scheme of my future?
If you’ve faced similar feelings or experiences, your insights would be greatly appreciated. Transitioning to college is a complex blend of excitement, anxiety, and self-discovery—knowing you’re not alone can make all the difference.
