Reflecting on a Challenging Yet Accomplished Summer Semester

As the summer semester comes to a close, it offers an opportunity to reflect on the journey—and the immense dedication it took to reach this point. For many students balancing academics with personal responsibilities, each semester presents unique challenges and rewards. My recent experience is no exception.

This summer proved to be particularly demanding. I enrolled in four upper-level online courses while managing the responsibilities of being a full-time stay-at-home parent to two children, aged five and twelve. My eldest has additional support needs, which means managing numerous appointments, therapies, and ongoing care routines. Traditionally, I would have completed coursework during school hours, but this summer required a significant shift in strategy and time management.

Without the luxury of a robust support system—my husband’s demanding work schedule and limited external childcare options—I had to get creative with my approach. We spent a considerable amount of time at places like the children’s museum, inflatable play centers, libraries, and playgrounds, where I could keep my children engaged while I focused on assignments. The experience was emotionally taxing; I faced moments of exhaustion and doubt, questioning whether I took on more than I could handle. Yet, despite the challenges, I persisted.

This perseverance paid off. Throughout previous semesters, I earned a GPA of 3.85 during fall and spring. As I prepare to submit my final grades for the summer, I am optimistic that I will improve that to a 4.0—a milestone I am eager to celebrate. Additionally, I am proud to share that I am now officially a junior in my academic journey. Reflecting on my early years—when I was a pregnant 19-year-old who dropped out of school—this progress feels especially meaningful. I know that she would be proud of how far I’ve come.

To everyone wrapping up their summer courses, congratulations on your hard work and resilience. For those beginning new semesters this fall, I wish you strength and success. No matter the obstacles, dedication and perseverance can lead to incredible achievements.
