Navigating the Challenges of Academic and Personal Struggles: A Personal Reflection
Many students and young adults find themselves at a crossroads when faced with the pressures of higher education, personal health challenges, and familial expectations. The journey, often fraught with obstacles, can feel overwhelming and unending. Today, I want to share a personal account that resonates with many who feel trapped in a cycle of academic pursuit and emotional turmoil.
A Difficult Beginning in Education
Like many, I entered college hopeful that higher education would bring relief and growth. However, I quickly realized that my experiences mirrored some of the frustrations I faced in high school—bureaucratic hurdles, irrelevant coursework, and a sense of stagnation. As someone who struggled with depression throughout high school, I hoped that college might offer a fresh start. Unfortunately, the reality was more complex, and I found myself in an exhausting cycle of repeated challenges.
Academic Struggles and Health Challenges
My academic journey has been tumultuous. Despite excelling during my first year—thanks to a focus on software-related coursework—I faced significant setbacks as I progressed. Several classes proved difficult to pass, leading to frustration and a sense of failure. The situation worsened during my third year when I became critically ill just before crucial exams. The fatigue, pain, and inability to walk lasted for weeks, resulting in me failing nearly all my classes that semester. Consequently, I now face an extension into my fifth year of studies, which means losing my scholarship due to university policies.
The Desire for a Break and Family Pressures
During these trying times, I yearn for a break—a chance to step back, breathe, and heal. I believe that requesting time off from my parents is reasonable, especially given my health issues. Unfortunately, the familial response has often been dismissive, leaving me feeling invalidated. In my country, completing a degree is often seen as essential for securing a livelihood, adding pressure to push through despite personal struggles.
Emotional Battles and the Need for Understanding
On top of academic and health challenges, I grapple with intense emotional stress. The constant struggle to wake up each day and face my circumstances can be draining. Recently, my health has deteriorated again, leading to missed classes and a sense of despair. I frequently receive antibiotics—sometimes monthly—as I battle recurrent illnesses, which further diminishes my energy and mental well-being.
