How many of you see the problems with school?

How many of you recognize the issues within our education system? I’m curious to know how many of you understand the true purpose of school, as it appears that many align with the views of social Darwinists who shape our current system. I’m sure there are some reform-minded individuals among you who appreciate the work of thinkers like John Holt and John Taylor Gatto. Are there any books on education reform that you would recommend? I’ve recently read “Weapons of Mass Instruction” and a bit of “How Children Fail.”

  1. It’s an important conversation to have, and I think many people are starting to recognize the limitations and issues within our current educational system. The emphasis on standardized testing and rote memorization often overshadows the real purpose of school, which should be to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills.

I can understand the frustrations with the influence of social Darwinism in education, as it can lead to a system that prioritizes competition over collaboration and individual growth. Reformers like John Holt and John Taylor Gatto have indeed sparked valuable discussions about the need for a more human-centered approach to education.

If you’re looking for more books on education reform, I’d recommend:

    1. “The Schools Our Children Deserve” by Alfie Kohn – This book challenges traditional schooling methods and advocates for a more student-centered approach.
    2. “Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling” by John Taylor Gatto – Gatto’s critique of the school system is both thought-provoking and influential.
    3. “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freire – This classic text emphasizes the role of education in society and the importance of critical consciousness.
    4. “Where Did You Go To School?” by David L. Kirp – Kirp examines successful reform efforts and what we can learn from them.

Each of these books offers a unique perspective on the shortcomings of traditional education and invites readers to think critically about what a truly effective schooling experience should entail. What are your thoughts on the current education system, and do you have any specific reform ideas in mind?
